There's a Meteor Shower This Week That You Definitely Don't Want to Miss

Get ready to cancel your Netflix binge this Friday night. The Draconid meteor shower is coming Oct. 7, and it's one you won't want to miss, for a couple reasons. Firstly, it's an annual space event that sounds like it's straight out of Harry Potter. Not only is it called Draconid (insert mental image of Draco Malfoy comets falling from the sky), but it's also named after Draco the Dragon, a constellation that "literally snakes its way through the northern sky." When looking from the ground, the meteor shower appears to come out of the dragon's head - Gringotts Dragon vibes, anyone?

Secondly, the meteor shower looks similar to the Leonid meteor shower, pictured here. It's known as an awesome shower every year, and in 2011, Europeans even saw 600 meteors per hour. In short, it's too beautiful to miss!

How to see it

According to timeanddate.com, if you're in North America, Europe, or Asia, you should be able to see the Draconid shower without looking in any specific direction. Just lie down on the ground in an area with lots of open sky and be on the lookout.

Best times to see it

According to the same site, the best time to see the meteor shower is just after the sun sets and before nightfall.

Ahead, see a couple more photos of the Leonid shower, and then plan to view the Draconid shower for yourself.
